VEGAN CHOCOLATE APPLE PIE CRUMB BARS
Apples are one of my favorite fruit and I find they go really well with chocolate.
I mean, what doesn’t go well with chocolate?
Oh, maybe pasta. Yeah, pasta doesn’t go really well with chocolate.
Trust me. I tried pouring melted chocolate over my spaghetti when I was a kid and it didn’t taste very good.
But anyway, apples and chocolate do go really well together 😀
EASY CHOCOLATE CRUMB BARS
These crumb bars are composed of three layers: the crust, the apple filling and the crumble.
To make the crust, I simply combined almond flour, oat flour (make sure it’s gluten-free if you’re intolerant), flax egg, cacao powder and agave syrup. I formed a dough and pressed 3/4 of the dough in a pan. I kept the remaining 1/4 of the dough to crumble over the apple filling. For the apple filling, I coated chopped apples with cinnamon and agave syrup and poured it over the crust.
A HEALTHY DESSERT
These bars don’t contain any gluten, oil or refined sugar so they are quite healthy for you. They are also great for meal prep so you can easily make them ahead of time and store them in an airtight container for up to a week. Keep in mind that this recipe makes 8 bars so you might want to make a double batch if you have kids or if you simply think 8 bars aren’t enough for a week 🙂

- 1 cup almond flour (ground almonds) - (110 g)
- 1 cup oat flour (ground oats, GF) - (100 g)
- 1 flax egg (1 tbsp ground flax seeds + 3 tbsp water, whisked together and set for 15 minutes)
- 1/3 cup agave or maple syrup (80 ml / 120 g)
- 1/4 cup cacao powder (25 g)
- 2 small apples, chopped (230 g)
- 1/4 cup agave or maple syrup (60 ml / 75 g)
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon (optional)
Preheat your oven to 355°F or 180°C.
Add all crust ingredients to a large bowl and combine everything until a dough forms. Separate the dough into 4 equal parts. Press 3/4 of the dough into a lined 8 inch square pan. Save the remaining 1/4 for the crumble. Bake the crust for 10-12 minutes.
In the meantime, combine chopped apples, agave or maple syrup and cinnamon in a bowl.
Once the crust is cooked, pour over the apple filling and spread it evenly with a spatula.
Crumble the remaining 1/4 of the crust over the apples and press down gently. Slightly wet your fingers if the dough is a bit sticky.
Put back in the oven for 20-25 minutes. Slice into bars and enjoy warm or cold 🙂
